Support for Elders with Emigrant Children - Community Helper
Background
Hong Kong Christian Service (HKCS) found in 2023 that over 36% of elderly people's children had emigrated since 2020, with more than 60% of these children being the primary caregivers. Nearly 80% of elderly people remaining in Hong Kong faced high social isolation risk, and 70% showed signs of depression. The alarming figures imply the urge needs for community and daily living support for these elders.
In August 2023, HKCS launched the "Community Helper - Support for Elders with Emigrant Children" project to reduce depression and improve well-being for about 200 elderly individuals through service matching and community support. The project continued in September 2024 with Version 2.0, focusing on empowering elderly participants to become community helpers, strengthening their confidence and social connections.
In July 2025, supported by the CTF Services Charity Foundation Limited, HKCS introduced a new one-year project "Community Helper - Support for Elders with Emigrant Children" continuing previous efforts while emphasizing the unique skills of elderly participants. The project transforms them from help seekers to community helpers, boosting confidence and deepening their community ties.
