We believe that inclusion is an important value of a civilised society, ensuring equal opportunities for people with differences. Our Shamshuipo Coordinating Committee (the Committee), consisting of our 22 units providing service in the district, conducted a "Survey on Social Harmony in Shamshuipo District" by means of questionnaires. 676 residents in the district were interviewed through questionnaire, of which more than 60% were carers. Additionally, three focus groups of carers were conducted.
The Committee held a press conference in October 2021. It was found that the friendlier the community is to the carers, the more inclusive people feel. The Committee, therefore, recommended: (1) taking the perspective of inclusion into account when improving medical and cultural facilities; (2) enhancing community respite services and information dissemination to reduce the pressure of carers; and (3) formulating long-term measures to promote social inclusion.
The Committee is working with families in Shamshuipo to advocate for the establishment of a "Parent-Child Reading Corner" in public libraries, to avoid other readers being affected by parent-child companion reading, so that everyone can share the community facilities in harmony.
A press conference was held with Shamshuipo residents to release the survey results.
We suggested that the Government should adopt the perspective of inclusion to improve the existing medical and cultural initiatives.
A working parent felt that there is a lack of emergency and immediate respite care services in the community.
