Support to Ethnic Elderly (SEE) Project

Support to Ethnic Elderly (SEE) Project

Introduction

The population of ethnic minorities (EM) is steadily rising in Hong Kong. According 2016 Bi-census, the population has been increased by 30% as compared to 2011 with the total number reaches 580 thousands. (Census and Statistics Department, 2016) Though the average age of EM population is younger than that of the entire population in Hong Kong, the ageing trend in the EM population still worth our early concerns so as to prepare mainstream services to meet the differentiated language and cultural needs of this group of seniors. In fact, numerous researches pointed out that many EM people, especially the elder group, experienced difficulties in accessing to local culture, various social systems and social service information owing to language and cultural differences, in which impede EM seniors to obtain appropriate social services.

Regarding existing mainstream services’ insufficient understanding on needs of EM seniors, current services are apparently inadequate to address to their unique needs due to culturally-diversed backgrounds. It is important to get prepared to face the challenges of the ageing trend of the EM population. Hence, “Support to Ethnic Elderly (SEE)” Project was established in 2016 with support from the Community Chest. The project aims at facilitating EM seniors to have a better social integration in Hong Kong and to enable them to live a dignified and active ageing life. Our objectives include:

  1. To enhance EM seniors’ knowledge and access to public services.
  2. To strengthen EM seniors’ social support networks in the community.
  3. To enhance mainstream elderly services providers’ awareness and competence to serve EM seniors.
