Our support to the development of social work profession
in Mainland China began as early as 1990. At that time,
we collaborated mainly with colleges in the northern
provinces such as Beijing and Shanghai. These were classified
as major colleges on the national level.
As the demand of the social work profession grew rapidly,
colleges in the southern provinces had great need for
support in training up social workers. We therefore
shifted some more support to the southern provinces.
Apart from supporting national colleges like Sun Yat-Sen
University, we wanted to share our experience with the
less privileged ones who had meager resources and weak
support teaching teams. After organising an intensive
workshop for the first batch social work students of
Guangdong Commercial College in April 2004, we accepted
her invitation to conduct a term course on 'Introduction
to Social Work' to the first year students from February
to June 2005. Furthermore staffs were sent to supervise
the students weekly from February to April 2005. And
the year three students will be invited to Hong Kong
to have field observation to widen their exposure before
carrying out their first fieldwork placement. Lecturers
are also invited to visit Hong Kong to get first hand
experience and reference in the coming summer.
