In
the school year of 2004, non-Chinese speaking (NCS)
students were allocated to local mainstream (Chinese
medium) schools for the first time. Though this implies
that NCS students are given equal opportunity in receiving
education, they may experience difficulties in adapting
to the Chinese learning environment as well as the language
itself. Some parents do not know either Chinese or English.
This causes frustration in supervising their children's
schoolwork and in communicating with the schools. Sensing
the need, we came up with a supportive service for NCS
students.
Project Connection -- Outside School Support Services
for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students sponsored by
Home Affairs Bureau started in October 2004. It aimed
at providing after-school tutorial classes for NCS students;
rendering supportive and consultation services in helping
students adjust to the school environment; providing
liaison services between school and parents, including
interpretation and also providing training to school
teachers and personnel so as to enhance a better understanding
of NCS students. The services are provided in five main
locations: Kwun Tong, Tsimshatsui, Shamshuipo, Kwai
Tsing and Yuen Long where many NCS students are residing
or attending schools there.
We believe in serving the non-Chinese community. We
are happy to have taken part in building a harmonious
society through projects like Project Connection.
