Chan Yue Ching's "City
Life" won first prize in water color printing
in the Hong Kong Abilympics. |
HKCS founded The On Wah Day Activity Centre in March
2003 to offer services to the moderate to severe mentally
handicapped adults aged from 15 and above. The center
provides various types of trainings, such as painting
and handcrafts, to help develop the participants' vocational
capabilities.
To give them opportunities to further develop their
abilities, four outstanding members of the center were
encouraged to participate in the Hong Kong Abilympics.
Indeed, one of those four members, Mr Chan Yue Ching,
had won the first prize in Water Color Painting.
Mr. Chan was also among the 23 Hong Kong representatives
who had been invited to participate in the 6th International
Abilympics, the Olympics for the disables, that took
place in New Delhi from November 23 to 29, 2003. In
that event, as a whole, Hong Kong Representatives won
one gold medal, one silver medal and one bronze medal.
The On Wah Centre member, Mr. Chan, received the 10th
position among the 28 contestants in the Painting (Water
Color) event.
The Centre-in-charge, Ms. Iris Cheung, was pleased
with Mr. Chan's achievements. She states that people
with disabilities flourish through their gifts and talents
when proper opportunities are given to them. Their accomplishment
surely help others learn to treat them equally and eventually;
their acceptance into society where they live.
The International Abilympics is regularly held once
every four year. The goals of such event are to discover
talents, to create awareness, to promote international
alliance, to inspire and to promote job opportunities
for the disables. In this 6th year, 1,500 participants
from 33 countries had attended.
