Development of Social Work Program
in Sun Yat-sen University

In view of the rising social problems and needs resulting from the various changes in policies and structures among social groups during the past decade in Mainland China, the demand for professional social workers is great all over this vast land.

Sun Yat-sen University was among the first few universities in the southern provinces that had started the Social Work Training Program since 2001. Nonetheless, accredited tutors and quality teaching materials remain inadequate. External resources and support are therefore essential in elevating the standard of social work profession in China.

Since April 2002, HKCS had begun sharing our practical experiences with Sun Yat-sen University including seminars and talks prepared for their first batch of Social Work students. This year, we have been invited to assist in coordinating and teaching their third year students a semester course on Youth Social Work. From September 2003 to January 2004, 11 members of our staff that have different expertise in various youth services will give 16 lectures to 35 third year students. It is our hope that we shall contribute valuable insights to their academic teachings.

To be part of the development of social work professionals in the Mainland has always been one of our missions. We aspire the social work professionals in China to attain an international standard in the foreseeable future.
