Caring for Our Community - Loving Our Neighbours
It is good news that SARS seems to be under control. As Hong Kong fought against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), our Youth Integrated Service played an active role in supporting the community. The Shamshuipo East Integrated Team initiated the "We Are With You Movement" that included the "Care Movement for the Community" and the "Anti-SARS Angel Campaign", which were implemented in different communities and schools respectively.

photoThe "Care Movement for the Community" aimed to promote love and care among community members. In April, we began setting up counters in Shamshuipo district. In this program, community members were encouraged to write messages of blessings and words of encouragement on bookmarks and to give them to their neighbors.

It was a joy for us to report that over 1,850 community members had visited our counters and they were blessed and encouraged through taking part in such action. Besides, we also distributed pamphlets on preventive measures against SARS, stress management and supportive services.

Apart from the "Care Movement for the Community", we partnered with local schools and put together an event called "Anti-SARS Angel Campaign". It was designed for primary-school students who started school again after the suspension of classes in April due to SARS. This campaign aimed to better the students' knowledge in general hygiene. Over 76 trained students were given the title "Angels" and the responsibility to encourage their classmates to build and maintain a health-conscious attitude and a hygienic life style.

photoOur Lei Cheng Uk & So Uk Integrated Team recognized that the residents in particularly the run-down residential buildings in the district were among the most needed people for whom we should care. Not only that the buildings were old they were in poor hygienic condition. The residents were mostly elderly singles, new immigrants from the Mainland and those who are currently receiving Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA).

The 'Anti-virus Campaign' was then launched. 'Anti-virus pack' was distributed to each household among over 70 blocks of those old residence. We were delighted to see that the Association of Hong Kong Hospital Christian Chaplaincy Ministry had willingly sponsored 3000 surgical masks in this campaign. The two-day visit took place in early June and 35 youth volunteers joined us in this campaign.
