In
November 2002, Stage I of the first Joint Training Workshop between
HKCS Mobile Adventure Activities Centre and Department of Social
Work and Administration of the China Youth College for Politics
was launched. Among the eighty attendees, some were the teaching
staff from the Social Work Department of China Youth College, others
included the supervisor of the youth hot-line service as well as
teachers and youth work leaders from secondary and primary schools
in provinces and cities all over the Mainland.
The
program comprised of two parts. Part I consisted of lectures on
concepts of social work, group work and adventure base counseling.
Part II consisted of four sessions of structured adventure activities
designed for 20 participants. In these sessions, real life experiences
in the group setting were introduced using the means of mobile adventure
activities. In addition, program design and techniques in briefing,
leading and debriefing were also introduced. The philosophy of experiential
learning blended very well with the specially designed "mobile
types" of adventure activities.
Participants in those sessions had found a new horizon
of using adventure activities in their everyday life. The group
experience had brought much personal growth and new dimensions to
their group work skills. Not only did they find mobile adventure
creative, handy and effective, they also felt that they could very
well apply the same method in their programs for youth leaders.
This joint program demonstrated successfully that
adventure activities could bring about fulfillment and productivity
among team members. Above all, the mobile adventure approach could
be an important move towards localization to suit the local scene.
