In response to the applause of the SUN Yat-sen
University students given to Mr. Ng Shui Lai, Director of HKCS,
at the speech made in April 2002, Professor HE Liping, a key staff
of the Social Work Department, invited HKCS to provide three additional
workshops for their first and second year social work students.
The first workshop was held in November 2002. The
Assistant Supervisor of School Social Work Service, Ms. Cammy Cheung,
and the Team Leader of Yuen Long District Youth Outreaching Social
Work Team, Miss Kylie Chung, were invited to conduct it with the
emphasis on youth services. In December 2002, Ms Florence Cheung,
the Assistant Supervisor, and Ms Cecilia Cheung, a seasoned caseworker,
of Family Counseling Service were invited to direct the second workshop.
Other than lectures, two small group discussions deliberating on
intervention skills and methods, difficulties encountered by workers
and limitations on the two services were introduced. In those practicum,
the speakers were requested to demonstrate the intervention process
on some of the raised questions. The attending students were especially
eager to learn the practical skills in working with problems among
adolescence and the counseling skills in conducting interviews.
It was indeed an invaluable opportunity to share
with the SUN Yat-sen University students on social services in Hong
Kong and to gain an understanding in the current development of
social work education in China.
The forth coming third workshop will be held in
March 2003.
