Expansion of PS33's Drug Prevention Services for secondary Schools

In view of the upsurge in the number of young psychotropic substance abusers and the increasing need of anti-drug service in secondary schools, the Social Welfare Department has allocated additional resources for five Counselling Centres for Psychotropic Substance Abusers starting from 1 July 2002. Such action from the department aims to help young people stay away from drugs and develop a healthy lifestyle. Our PS33 - Centre for Psychotropic Substance Abusers, as one of the operators of these centres, will expand its services to provide drug prevention service for 84 secondary schools in West Kowloon District including YauTsimMong, Shumshuipo, Mei Foo and Kowloon City. The scope of such service involves drug preventive talks, seminars and workshops; therapeutic groups for high-risk students, training on professional drug prevention strategies for teachers and consultation services for school personnel. Other tailor-made drug preventive programs will also be offered for schools gearing to their specific needs.

With concerted efforts in providing drug prevention service for secondary schools on regional basis, PS33 will network with schools, local committees and youth organizations in the region to form a united front in anti-drug work. Through interfacing of services with the Substance Abuse Clinic of Kowloon Hospital, our agency's youth service and family service units, PS33 will provide one-stop service ranging from prevention, early intervention, treatment, detoxification and intensive counseling for high-risk youth, occasional substance abusers and habitual substance abusers in a timely and comprehensive manner.
