Hong Kong Christian Service has
cultivated a close partnership with the Department of Social
Work and Administration (CYC) at the China Youth College for
Politics. Periodic visits, seminars and workshops are often
arranged with the department. In June this year, our Head of
Corporate Affairs and Community Relations Department, Mr. Barry
Wong, gave a seminar on " Steps to Become a Social Worker
" to more than a hundred social work students (class 2000)
who would start their first placement in the summer. Their responses
and questions reveal the new generation of social workers' expectations
in China.
Training
on the "Basic Concepts and Principles of Counseling"
was also conducted for the 17 students (class 1999) and teachers
who took part in the "Youth Hotline" service. The
Training aimed at strengthening their confidence, establishing
a solid value system and widening their knowledge and skills
in counseling.
Moreover, a workshop on "How to Conduct Fieldwork Supervision"
took place around the same time. In the workshop, topics of
"Humane Guidelines", "Fieldwork Mechanisms"
and "Introduction to Practical Tools" were tackled.
We hope that through this integration of social work theories
and practice together with the actual experience shared by HKCS,
the attending teachers would be enlightened. By understanding
situations and scenarios from western culture and from Hong
Kong, together with CYC's valuable experience gained in the
past decade, we hope to see the kind of Fieldwork Training reflecting
the uniqueness of its culture that will best apply to China.
