The media environment in Hong Kong has been seriously
polluted in recent years. Children are helpless under the bombardment
of the media; thus media education deems to be most needed.
In view of this, HKCS commits itself to advocate media education
as one of its special tasks. We specifically targeted on children
from age 4 to 12 and their guardians (including teachers, parents
and social workers), a group to which seemingly the least media
education has been given.
With one primary staff, who would plan and organize
the programs, together with Dr Alice Lee yuet-lin, Assistant
Professor of Hong Kong Baptist University Department of Journalism
who kindly accepted our invitation as the voluntary consultant,
we attempted to cultivate a media-literate generation.
We had obtained our funding from Quality Education
Fund to support this project, we called, 'Children Media Education
in all Directions'. This would be a one-year project started
from July 2001 until July 2002. It consisted of three parts:
Stand Up Show and Talk Tour in 35 primary schools; Media Education
Workshops for eight schools, eight sessions in each school;
and a Joint Performance from all the participating schools to
share their thoughts on media and its influence.
This project is the first step to lead us into
building a partnership with different primary schools for the
design of our teaching kits.
