Participation in the Development of Social Welfare in China

Students of the Department of Social Work and Administration of China Youth College for Politics visit HKCSHong Kong Christian Service has always showed a genuine concern in the social welfare development of Mainland China. One of our five mission directions for the Agency is 'to participate in the development of social welfare in China". Several endeavors were thus initiated.

  • Since 1991 the Agency has been organizing training programs for social work postgraduate students from Peking University to receive training in Hong Kong nearly once every year. Last year, the Agency had started a joint project with an elderly hostel and the Department of Social Work and Administration of China Youth College for Politics. The project was designed to proactively explore supervision models for the placement students to practice in a fieldwork unit.

  • Meeting with colleagues of Shanghai  Childrens CentreBesides the publication of curriculum for pre-school education in simplified character version to share the expertise, the Agency also co-organizes large scale seminars with the Education Department of Beijing Normal University to facilitate exchange of experience on pre-school education between Beijing and Hong Kong.

  • To equip our staff with knowledge on recent social welfare development in Shanghai, the Agency has organized a study tour to Shanghai in December 2000.A total of 14 different and significant organizations were visited in 5 days. To the request of the local hotline service practitioners, a seminar on hotline services was added to the program. Staff from the Agency had shared experience of hotline service in Hong Kong and they had also gained new insights and inspiration through the additional seminar. A reporting session was held to conclude this fruitful study trip and to share their observations with other staff of the Agency as well as staff from other agencies.

There are certainly arising needs and opportunities for the Agency to participate in the development of social welfare in China, and the Agency is ready and will continue to pursue this quest.
