Elders performing the Ching Dynasty Dance.

To echo the 1999 International Year of Older Persons, the HKCS held a programme known as the "Hong Kong Elderly Volunteers Social Service Day". It was divided into 2 main parts. The first part was known as "Love Action" in which 794 elders from 17 elderly service units were gathered together to provide 23 volunteer services to 2,784 people among living alone elders, hospital patients, private elderly hostels, and special schools. In addition, our elderly volunteers also assisted in the activities held by youth centres, elderly hostels, social centres for the elderly, etc. This has given our elderly volunteers an opportunity to develop their potentials, as well as to set up a good example for the public. Lots of people visiting the handicraft zone.

The Cultural Flea Market at the square of Shatin Hall made up the second part. The Flea Market consisted of four zones put together by 15 elderly service units. The four zones are the handicraft zone, food zone, game zone, and performance zone. Through the design of various activities, the Flea Market served as a medium to introduce the Chinese culture and traditions to the next generation.
