A total of 861 elders aged between 60 and 96 from 33 different groups participated in the 14th Athletic Gala for the Elderly held by the HKCS, the Provisional Urban Council and the Provisional Regional Council. This year's oldest participants are Mr Ngai Chi Ping (88 years old) and Miss Chun Siu (96 years old), who have set an excellent example of elders participating the Gala with much enthusiasm.

Since the theme for the 1999 International Year of Older Persons is "Towards the Society of All Ages", we introduced an Inter-Generation Rally Competition in the Gala. The participating eight groups must have a member of 60 years of age or over, and with 3 other members from a different generation to finish a 4 x 100 metre rally. We have also invited 30 children from the HKCS Shek Kip Mei Day Care Centre to demonstrate warm up exercises and to do a dance performance to show their support for the elders.
