In order to share the pressure and burden of the long term caregivers of demented elders, our Service Project for Demented Elders provides 2 sessions of respite service for demented elders each week in Tsing Yi Cheung Fat Home for the Elderly. The service consisted of Reality Orientation, Reminiscing, Memory Training, Music and Movement, Handicraft Making, and Recreational Activities.
In June, a press conference was held to release the preliminary findings of a study on "Caregiving impacts and needs of demented elderly caregivers in Hong Kong". It is recommended that mass education programs about the disease have to be launched to facilitate the early detection. Training courses have to be organized to family and caregivers. Day respite program is also in great demand to allow the caregivers a break from their 24-hour caring responsibility.
