Athletics Gala for the Elderly

800 Elderly gathered together　

to share their Strong Wills,　

Great Strength,　

and New Acquaintances

jointly organized held by the HKCS, the Provisional Urban Council and the　

Provisional Regional Council on December 2, 1997 at the Northern District　

Sports Ground. There were 797 elderly aged from 60 to 94 participated in　

various track and field sports.

Mr Benny Cheung Wai Leung, who won 4 gold medals in the 1996　

Atlanta Olympics for the Handicapped, was invited to the Gala. He commented　

on the benefits of exercise towards a healthy physical and social life, "I believe

that elderly can also do the appropriate amount of exercise to maintain a　

healthier life and to prevent from sickness. I also think that through participating　

in sports gala, elderly can make new friends and thus they have more people to　

share with."
