Sharing Our School Social Work Experience with Joy

Sharing Our School Social Work Experience with Joy

HKCS has always taken on the advocator's role in the area dealing with specific learning disabilities. Back in 2005, our School Social Work Service has made numerous recommendations to the Education and Manpower Bureau concerning policies and services based on our surveys. In that same year, we held Hong Kong's very first "Care for the Specific Learning Disabilities Open Forum" for the secondary school teachers.

This year, on 21 June, we held Hong Kong's very first "Open Forum on Specific Learning Disabilities" especially for the secondary school social workers. "Secondary School Social Workers Handbooks on Specific Learning Disabilities" were handed out. Over one hundred school social workers representing 80% of the agencies that provide school social work service attended the forum. The practicality and elevation of knowledge by the forum were highly appraised by the attendees. One of the aims of this forum was to share our experience. More importantly, it was to promote concern for the learning disabled and elicit a response with good service.

Aside from these, in order to assist schools to handle crisis negotiations more effectively, our School Social Work Service held several public seminars with the Police together. We also co-authored with their Negotiation Team on a book called "Crisis Negotiation - Practical Handbook for Handling School Crisis" for all secondary schools in Hong Kong. The handbook is now published and sent to all secondary schools. Please feel free to call 2389 4242 for further information.
