The
statistical data of the 2001 Census reveals that
there are about 7,000 South Asian youths living
in Hong Kong. Compared with the general youth
population, South Asian youths have fallen far
away from Government's attention especially with
regards to their chances of receiving education,
vocational training and career assistance. Less
than 10% South Asians have received higher education,
such as the matriculation, tertiary education,
or vocational training.
In order to dedicate to the welfare of the non-Chinese
community in Hong Kong, we started Project SAY-PRO
in May, which is funded by the Youth Sustainable
Development and Engagement Fund. It aims to strengthen
the work skills and motivation of South Asian
youth, to enhance their aspiration and confidence
in employment and to enhance self-esteem and self-efficacy.
Project SAY-PRO serves South Asian youths aged
17 to 24 who is either unemployed or unengaged
from the school system. The project offers 3 training
packages designed specifically for the South Asian
youth. They are, namely, Personal Growth Training,
Specific Job Skills Training and On Site Job Attachment
Training.
Any youth who wants to join this project can
apply in person, by phone (2342-6156), by fax
(2790-8955) or by email ktis@hkcs.org.
We also welcome teachers and social workers to
give referrals. It is our obligation to serve
ethnic minorities and our wish that South Asian
youth have a good career prospect. |
