Many
children from poor families claimed that they
have never experienced ice-skating, movie-watching
or bowling. They do not think they can have such
experiences before they grow up and have income
from work. Poverty restricts children's opportunities
to fully develop their potential. They lack exposure
to areas such as leadership training, knowledge
building, life experiences and interests development.
Children from poor families require our community's
care and assistance.
"Fly to dreams" is a program which
emphasizes on the development of children in poor
families. It is held by the Hong Kong Christian
Service Shamshuipo (East) Happy Teens Club from
June to August 2005. The program is sponsored
by the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Community
Foundation - District Community Programme. Children
have to join an exchange scheme in which they
contribute their love and care to the community
through volunteer services and get "opportunity
coupons" in proportion to the hours of volunteer
work. They can freely join interest classes or
special activities with the opportunity coupons.
Our social workers will help to explore their
interests and discover their potentials.
We are pleased to get support also from businesses
such as the ice skating company, food industry
and transportation company. They will organise
some special activities for these less favourable
children in the coming summer holiday.
Poor children are seedlings growing in unfertile
soil. They will only grow healthily and become
roof trees if we water and fertilize well. |
