The Education and Manpower Bureau had worked hard to
tackle the issue of specific learning disabilities among
students since 1980. However, a research on this topic
conducted by HKCS in December 2004 revealed that the
concern and support granted to the secondary school
level was relatively lower than the primary school level.
The research was brought to public attention and a
special seminar was organized for the secondary school
teachers in January 2005. The actual situation of the
specific learning disabilities of secondary school students
in Hong Kong, the present support and relevant services
were presented. Practical handling skills and suggestions
were given by various professionals, such as a doctor
from the Child Assessment Service of the Department
of Health, an educational psychologist from the Education
and Manpower Bureau and a representative from the Parents
and School Cooperation program under the Hong Kong University.
Specific learning disabilities students and their parents
were invited to participate. More than one hundred concerned
individuals including secondary school principals, teachers,
social workers and educational psychologists attended
the seminar to share their views. Report of the research
can be accessed on HKCS website at www.hkcs.org.
