Interpretation Support Service for South Asians

“Problems in communicating with South Asians?”

“Don’t know how to explain school events!”

RATIONALE OF THE SERVICE

Language barrier is one of the most significant access barriers for South Asians to community services, creating great hindrance to social integration. Hence, Happy Teens Club together with Project SASA of Hong Kong Christian Service have jointly launched a new interpretation service in Hindi, Urdu and Nepali. In this service, South Asians will be recruited as freelance interpreters to provide interpretation support to organisations, government departments, schools and South Asians in order to facilitate effective communication among South Asians and local people. Besides, through the involvement as helpers, South Asians can contribute their talents in serving others.

SERVICE OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide interpretation service to service providers of organisations, government departments or school personnels in order to facilitate effective communication with South Asian people.
  2. To provide interpretation service to South Asian people and assist them in finding suitable service resources so as to facilitate their adjustment in Hong Kong.

SERVICE TARGETS

  1. Service providers of Non-Governmental Organisations or Government Departments.
  2. School personnels or teachers
  3. South Asians in need of interpretation support.

SERVICE CONTENTS

  1. To provide verbal (on site) interpretation service in Urdu, Nepali and Hindi
  2. To provide simple written interpretation service in Urdu, Nepali and Hindi such as interpreting school memo, notice and social service information, etc.

Tuesday 2-6pm Hindi
7-10pm Chinese, English
Wednesday 2-6pm Nepali
7-10pm Chinese, English
Thursday 2-6pm, 7-10pm Chinese, English
Friday 2-6pm Urdu
7-10pm Chinese, English
Saturday 10am-1pm, 2-6pm Chinese, English
Sunday 10am-1pm Chinese, English

Since the opening hours of the unit has been changed during summer,
the service will be suspended on Tuesday night
from 18 July 2006 to 25 August 2006.

FEE CHARGING

  1. Verbal (On-site) interpretation service
    • $50 per hour with minimum 2 hours
    • Round trip traveling expenses
  2. Written interpretation service
    • $1 per word (minimum $100)

REMARKS

  1. With the limitation of resources, service will be provided by South Asian trained helpers instead of qualified interpreters.
  2. South Asians in need of interpretation support but with financial difficulty can apply for fee waiving on the above charges.
